Acetyl-L-carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid are each impressive supplements in their own right; however, research is showing that in combining these two supplements, the deterioration associated with aging can be subdued or even reversed.
In 2002, the University of California, Berkeley; and Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute teamed up to do research on Acetyl-L-carnitine combined with alpha-lipoic acid. In their study, rats were fed a combination of these two supplements for over a month, which resulted in them having a better memory and more energy. Amazingly, their brain chemistry actually improved. Dr. Bruce N. Ames of UC Berkeley noted that all the characteristics they looked at seemed more like a younger animal after supplementation. UC Berkeley was so impressed with the findings that they patented the combo for cell rejuvenation. The researchers founded a company to further their research and, at the time of the publication, were engaged in human clinical trials.
Healthy mitochondria are vital for healthy aging, and this combo is built to make them last. In normal aging, free radicals accumulate instead of being destroyed by the mitochondria. With the Acetyl-L-carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid combo, alpha-lipoic acid triggers the mitochondria to destroy free radicals and the acetyl-L-carnitine boosts the activity of carnitine acetyltransferase, an enzyme largely responsible for burning fuel in the mitochondria. As Dr. Ames said, "Each chemical solves a different problem - the two together are better than either one alone."(1)
Ames went on to say that the dramatic effects on the rats would be similar to a senior citizen behaving like someone in their fifties. A different study found that even young animals treated with the combo had better intact morphology than untreated young animals.
Researchers began to look more closely at the affects of supplementation on memory function. Both spatial and temporal memory improved, and oxidative damage to the hippocampus of the brain decreased. It has been said that the Acetyl-L-carnitine/alpha-lipoic acid combo may also protect from neurodegeneration or cognitive impairment. This combination also shows great potential for neurological repair in diseases such as: age related dementia; Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is better known as Lou Gehrig's disease; Alzheimer's disease (AD); and Multiple sclerosis (MS), which is also known as “disseminated sclerosis” or “encephalomyelitis disseminata.”
